Only So Many Tomorrows

November 27, 2009

“Whatever you want to do, do it now. There are only so many tomorrows.” Michael Landon

We’d like to think that there are plenty of tomorrows ahead. Most of us put off things we should be doing, planning to do them later. But later stretches over days, weeks, months and years.

But the fact is that life presents no guarantees. Fatal accidents can happen to anyone. The life of a young soldier on the battlefield can be snuffed out by a stray bullet or bomb. Many young people have a false sense that they are someone invincible and can experiment with drugs and engage in risky behavior. Yet how often do you see young lives snuffed out in a fatal car crash or shot from an altercation at a pub?

Age creeps up quickly and with it comes the aches and pains. The experience we get as we suffer through another migraine, or a bout with the flu reminds us that life is too short. It can’t be squandered away over trivialities. Too many waste the precious moments of life in a constant struggle to make a dollar, yet fail to realize that there’s more to life than the accumulation of wealth.

Many people simply waste the gifts they possess. They fail to use their skills and talents that could make them happy and successful. Their focus is a narrow one, centered around a job and paying the bills while enjoying what little time they have over the weekend to go drinking with the buddies or watching endless football games.

But life must have meaning. It must be lived in such a way that it contributes something toward family and society. So many people fail to see that they could make the world a far better place if only they set aside their greed and selfishness and focused on working toward a worthwhile goal.

Michael Landon, famed for his starring roles on Bonanza and Little House on the Prairie knew the value of life and made it special. He made every tomorrow count and so should we.

Your Future Potential

November 15, 2009

We cannot become what we need to be by remaining where we are.” Max De Pree

Everyone has the potential to become better. They can become valuable and productive members of society adding value to the common good. They can become well rounded and responsible citizens. That is the purpose of life. So if you’re not growing, you’re not reaching your full potential.

Unfortunately, many people give up on life. They see no hope for the future. They have learned to accept things the way they are and remain content just doing what they continue to do with little incentive to change unless a crisis forces them to make a change.

Everyone fears to step out of their comfort zone and into the unknown. Doubts about their abilities, fear of failure and ridicule stifle many into inaction. They fail to see that joy comes from activity. Success comes from taking risks to improve both personal character and the current circumstances.

Growth is an important need of human nature. Dissatisfaction has driven many to make improvements to their lifestyles. It’s that constant need to keep advancing, to keep growing that has taken man from the Stone age to today’s world of technological marvels. While we have advanced to the stage where we can easily destroy ourselves with weapons of mass destruction, the motivation to keep getting better still moves us relentlessly forward.

We must advance to give life meaning. And we need to advance in all areas of life, physically, mentally, spiritually and socially. To stop is to die. Whether religious or not, it’s a fundamental character trait of every human to be better than what he is. Even the Bible encourages us to take dominion over all things.

While we have advanced in technology, we are yet babes when it comes to spiritual growth. We haven’t yet learned how to get along with one another. Future potential comes when we can live in harmony with friends and enemies alike. Ultimate growth comes when we achieve ultimate peace and work to help one another grow as one into health, success, happiness and wealth.

The Definition of Good Health

November 14, 2009

Health is a state of complete physical, mental and social well being, and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.” World Health Organization, 1948

While the WHO may have redefined their definition of health since 1948, the state of health of many today is in crisis. Diseases such as cancer, diabetes, arthritis and heart disease are increasing throughout the world and no one appears to have an answer.

Ask anyone on the street and you are likely to get the answer that health is the absence of pain and illness. But this doesn’t hold true to the above definition as many people see themselves  healthy even though they take a pharmacy of drugs and medications to feel that way.

The state of health in the general populace is dismal. Through the lack of exercise, improper diet, a life of high stress and bad habits, many have compromised their immune system to the point that they are vulnerable to all the viruses and diseases that seek to attack the body daily but seldom appeared in the population a hundred years ago.

A healthy body doesn’t easily get sick. The native American of yesteryear was exceptionally healthy. Sickness was virtually nonexistent. If one of the members of the tribe became ill, this called for the witch doctor to dispel the evil spirit that occupied the body.

Disease and illness does not have to strike. Today’s medical authorities would have you believe that you’re bound to get sick. The proper care of the body insures the maintenance of  health well into old age. If you don’t believe that, just ask Jack Lalanne.

The body is a complex mechanism, filled with checks and balances. Its nature is to maintain health and stay that way. It’s when we feed it with nutrition-less foods filled with fats, sugar, chemicals and other unwholesome ingredients that we can expect trouble to develop. Our bodies are an eco-system that requires the right nutrients in the proper amounts. We need to be active to burn off the calories that can add to fat from a sedentary lifestyle. Exercise is a vital ingredient.

Of course today’s world is a far cry to our ancestors who had to hunt and fish for survival. Sitting at home in the recliner, sitting on the commute to work and sitting in the office chair on the job doesn’t provide the body with the need for exercise.

It’s rare to find healthy  seniors residing in nursing homes or who must use a cane or walker to get around. But if you find someone who still lives in their home by themselves,  you can be sure that they eat a proper diet and get lots of exercise.

The Role of Religion in Human Affairs

November 5, 2009

For centuries man has tried in vain to convince his fellow man that he held the only key for immortality. He has preached that message from the pulpits, from Sunday morning evangelist broadcasts on television and even resorted to violence and murder to convince sinners to repent and accept their faith as the gospel truth.

If you didn’t believe, you were branded a heretic, condemned to eternal damnation. And in may of the religious pogroms of the Middle Ages, many died even if they embraced the faith forced upon them.

But religion has nothing to do with cramming cherished doctrines down the throat of others. All the world’s major religions teach tolerance and respect for one another. There are no quotations in the Holy books that ever promote violence as the course of action to convince someone to repent under the threat of death.

Many believe that they have the only religion, the one right faith that will get them into paradise. Some are so convinced of it that they will either die for that belief or kill someone who would challenge it. But they fail to realize that no religion is perfect, nor does any one religion have complete truths. Yes, they point to the Bible, at the disciples Christ gathered around him to spread his message of love and peace. This made a church, and thus the one true church that matters.

But they completely miss the point. Christ, according to the Bible, came to die for man’s sins, not to start a new religion. If He had intended to do so, there would be plenty of evidence to prove it. After all, we were taught that God is all powerful, so it stands to reason that He is quite capable of convincing everyone that Christianity is the one and only true belief system.

There are no true religions simply because there are no perfect humans. All of us are imperfect. We believe that which we feel is right, regardless of whether that belief is based on fact or fantasy. That is simple human nature. No religion can be the correct one unless it is lead by God himself and not by self-proclaimed evangelists.

Every religion today is run by men who are imperfect. Human nature, being what it is, is highly motivated to protect both possessions and power. All the great empires in history eventually collapsed under greed and corruption by the elite that held the power and hung on to it at the expense of its citizens. Strong nations did not fall under constant invasions, they collapsed from within as the rot of greed spread from the seats of government on down to the people.

So it is with religion. Whether Christianity, Judaism, Islam, Hinduism or any other faith, they will all fail as they are run by men who eventually become enamored with greed and power and become corrupted by it. This is proof enough that there is no one true religion. Like the old empires of old, the faiths of today will fail, though that may change at the second coming of the Christ.

It’s not what particular belief you embrace that is important. It’s whether you believe and follow the tenets espoused by your faith. Unfortunately, while many profess to believe, few live up to what they believe. Many go through the motions as they believe it’s expected of them. They’ll attend Sunday mass, slip a good deal of money into the collection basket when it comes around, but once church attendance is over, they’re back to living life as if the commandments had no sway over them the rest of the week.

True religion is not a on-time event that comes around once a week. It is not intended to be some homework that must be done. But that is the way most people treat their faith. A Christian that relegates his faith to a one-day affair and acts in contravention of the Commandments is no different to the Jew, Hindu or Muslim that acts the same way.

According to the Bible Christ criticized the Pharisees for their love of fine clothes and esteemed position in that day’s religious hierarchy. He found fault in their stubbornness to hold onto their religious power that had corrupted their beliefs and made them mute and insignificant in the eyes of the people who looked up to them for spiritual guidance. Their corruption lead the people to do the same, having no real leaders to demonstrate right from wrong.

Since no religion is the right one, it’s necessary to live by the words written in the Bible, the Koran, the Talmud or other religious texts and take what the religious leaders of the day proclaim as truth with a grain of salt.

We might laugh at the Buddhist monk that sits meditating for hours on his cushion, but you can say that at least he’s not out in society actively trying to stick it to his fellow man while claiming God as his savior. Perhaps we can have more respect for those who pray and meditate far too much as they’re less likely to steal, covet or kill.

If we all showed love, compassion and respect for one another, we would never need religion to remind us of how to live.
